But when his friend fails to appear, Jack learns more of local custom and folklore, and while the drums in the streets grow louder he wonders how, and to what purpose, a person could vanish from the knowledge and recall of an entire village. A Cornish haunting, featuring the antiquarian and folklorist William Henry Paynter.

Cornwall, 1950. The shores of Nanskowan Lake on Bodmin Moor, where the idyllic peace and charm of Daniel and Venetia Overshot’s holiday home is soured by uncanny noises and ghostly visitations. Hearing his broadcast on the Home Service they call upon the help of William Paynter, noted local researcher of folklore, witchcraft and the supernatural. Veteran of numerous ghost hunts, Paynter soon discovers that this is no regular haunting, but part of a centuries old tradition, a legacy of the village now lost below the waters. William Henry Paynter was a folklorist and antiquary, whose research and writings preserved many accounts of witchcraft, ghosts, popular magic and folk practices in Cornwall as they began to disappear in the first half of the twentieth century. His significant body of work has been described as the last great collection of Cornish folklore.
He was a regular columnist in the local and national press, along with frequent appearances on radio and television. On the 29th August 1930 William Paynter was initiated as a bard of the Cornish Gorsedd at the Hurlers stone circles on Bodmin Moor, where he took the Kernewek bardic name of ‘Whyler Pystry’, meaning ‘Seeker out of witchcraft'.
